Frequently asked questions

Is this BMI calculator free and anonymous?

Yes. It’s free, requires no sign-up, and works for adults using either US or metric units. You get your BMI, your weight category, and the healthy weight range for your height in pounds or kilograms.

Is my height and weight data stored anywhere?

No. Your BMI is calculated in your browser, and your height and weight are never sent to our server. The calculator remembers your unit choice and last entries in this browser only, so it opens the same way next time; “Reset settings” under the tool clears them.

How is BMI calculated?

BMI is weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. For US units, the calculator converts feet, inches and pounds to metric first. For example, someone 5 feet 9 inches tall weighing 160 pounds has a BMI of about 23.6, which is in the healthy range.

What is a healthy BMI for adults?

For most adults, a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 is considered a healthy weight, under 18.5 is underweight, 25 to 29.9 is overweight, and 30 or higher is in the obesity range. The calculator also shows which weight range corresponds to 18.5 to 24.9 for your height.

Is BMI accurate for athletes, older adults or teens?

BMI is a quick screening tool, not a diagnosis. It doesn’t account for muscle mass, age, sex or body fat distribution, so muscular people may read as overweight. This calculator uses adult categories; children and teens need age- and sex-specific BMI percentiles from a pediatrician.

Can I use the BMI calculator with metric units?

Yes. Tap Metric (cm, kg) and enter your height in centimeters and weight in kilograms. The result is the same BMI number, and the healthy weight range is shown in kilograms. It picks US units by default for US English browsers and remembers your choice.
