Frequently asked questions
Is the color palette generator free to use?
Yes. It’s free, needs no sign-up and has no usage limits. You can extract palettes and pick colors from as many images as you like, then copy HEX codes, CSS variables or download a palette PNG.
Is my image uploaded when I extract a color palette?
No. The image is drawn onto a canvas in your browser, and both the palette extraction and the pixel color picker read the pixels locally. Nothing is sent to a server, so it’s safe to use with unreleased designs or private photos.
How do I find the HEX code of a color in an image?
Load the image, then move your mouse over it (or tap on a phone). The swatch next to the image updates with the HEX and RGB value of the pixel under your pointer. Click the image to lock that color and copy its HEX code to your clipboard.
How does the tool pick the main colors from a photo?
It shrinks the image to a small sample and groups similar pixels with a median-cut algorithm, then averages each group into one color. Fully transparent pixels are ignored. Changing the Colors slider re-runs the extraction instantly with 4 to 10 swatches.
Can I use the extracted palette in my CSS or design app?
Yes. Copy CSS variables gives you a :root block with --color-1, --color-2 and so on, ready to paste into a stylesheet. You can also click individual swatches to copy HEX codes for Figma, Canva or Photoshop, or download the palette as a PNG image with each HEX code labeled.
Which image formats work with the color picker?
Any image your browser can open, including JPG, PNG, WebP and GIF. Large images are shown at up to 1,200 pixels wide for picking, which keeps the exact colors of the visible pixels. Colors are reported in HEX and RGB (sRGB).
