Frequently asked questions

Is adding page numbers to a PDF free, and is there a page limit?

Yes, it’s free with no sign-up and no watermark. There’s no fixed page limit; long PDFs just take a little longer because everything runs in your browser. The result shows how many pages were numbered once the download starts.

Is my PDF uploaded when adding page numbers?

No. The PDF is opened with pdf.js for the preview and numbered with pdf-lib, both running in your browser. Your document never goes to our server, which makes it safe for contracts, manuscripts and other confidential files.

How do I add page numbers to a PDF but skip the cover page?

Set Skip first pages to 1, and numbering starts on page 2 at your Start at value. If the cover should still count, so the second page reads 2, tick Count skipped pages in the numbering. Use Only these pages, such as 3-10, 12, for custom ranges.

How do I add “Page X of Y” numbers to a PDF?

Choose Page 1 of N or 1 of N from the Format menu. N is the total count of numbered pages. For wording like “Section A · 3/40,” pick Custom and write a template with {n} for the page number and {N} for the total.

Can I number PDF pages like a printed book?

Yes. Pick an outer-corner position such as bottom right, then tick Mirror left/right on even pages so even pages get the number on the left side. You can also use roman numerals (i, ii, iii) for front matter and set a custom start number.

What fonts and styles can I use for PDF page numbers?

Choose Helvetica, Times or Courier, with optional bold, a size from 6 to 36 points, any color, and a margin from 6 to 120 points from the page edge. Numbers are added as real text, stay upright on rotated pages, and existing content isn’t changed. Password-protected PDFs can’t be opened.
