How to use Unit Converter
- 1. Pick a category such as Length, Weight, Temperature or Fuel economy, or type a phrase like 5 ft to cm in the quick-convert box.
- 2. Enter a value on either side — both boxes are live, so you can convert in either direction without pressing a button.
- 3. Use Swap to flip the units, and read the formula line underneath to see exactly how the number was calculated.
- 4. Scroll to the all-units table to see the same value in every unit, then copy a single row, the result, or a share link.
Frequently asked questions
How many centimeters are in a foot?
Exactly 30.48 centimeters. The international foot is defined as 0.3048 meters, so 5 feet is 152.4 cm. Type 5 ft to cm in the quick-convert box and the converter shows the result along with the multiply-by factor it used.
How do I convert Fahrenheit to Celsius?
Subtract 32, then multiply by 5/9. For example, 70 °F is 21.1 °C. The Temperature tab also covers Kelvin and Rankine, uses the exact formulas instead of rounded shortcuts, and warns you if a value falls below absolute zero.
Why are there two kinds of gallons and cups?
The US gallon is 3.785 liters, while the UK imperial gallon is 4.546 liters, so recipes and fuel figures differ by about 20%. Volume and Cooking list both systems separately, including US cups, metric cups, pints, quarts and fluid ounces.
Is 1 GB 1,000 MB or 1,024 MB?
Both are used. Storage makers use decimal units, so 1 GB is 1,000 MB. Operating systems often use binary units, where 1 GiB is 1,024 MiB. The Data tab shows both sets side by side, and Data rate converts Mbps to MB/s.
Can I convert mpg to liters per 100 km?
Yes. The Fuel economy tab converts US mpg, UK mpg, L/100 km and km/L. Because L/100 km is an inverse measure, the math is a division rather than a simple multiplication; for example, 30 US mpg equals about 7.84 L/100 km.
Is the unit converter free and private?
Yes. It is free with no sign-up, and every calculation runs in your browser, so nothing you type is sent to a server. A share link stores the values after the # in the address, which browsers do not send to websites.
