How to Calculate Your Age in Years, Months and Days
To calculate your exact age, count the whole years since your birth date, then the whole months since your last birthday, then the leftover days. Someone born on March 15, 1990 is 36 years, 6 months and 12 days old on September 27, 2026, which is 13,345 days in total. The steps are simple, but short months, leap years and February 29 birthdays make hand counting easy to get wrong by a day. This guide shows the three-pass method, the borrowing step that trips people up, how leap-day birthdays are handled, and how to find your age on a specific date for school cutoffs, benefits or visa forms. The free GrabCast Age Calculator does all of it in your browser and adds totals, your next birthday and date math.

For most conversations, your age in years is plenty. But many rules hinge on a precise date. Kindergarten eligibility in many states depends on turning 5 by a cutoff such as September 1. The legal drinking age of 21 applies from the birthday itself. Medicare eligibility generally starts at 65, and full Social Security retirement age is 67 for anyone born in 1960 or later. Sports leagues group players by age on a set date, and visa or insurance forms may ask for age on the day of travel or when a policy starts. In each case, being off by a day can mean a rejected form or a missed window, so it pays to count carefully or let a calculator do it.
How to calculate your age step by step
Work in three passes, always moving forward from the birth date. Example: born March 15, 1990; target date September 27, 2026.
- Whole years: March 15, 1990 to March 15, 2026 is 36 years. If the birthday had not yet arrived this year, you would count only 35.
- Whole months: March 15 to September 15, 2026 is 6 months.
- Leftover days: September 15 to September 27 is 12 days.
- Result: 36 years, 6 months and 12 days. That born-on-a-Thursday baby has lived 13,345 days, about 1,906 weeks.
Always count forward from the birth date to the target date. Counting backward from today can produce a different number of leftover days when the months involved have different lengths.
Borrowing days when the date has not come around yet
The tricky case is when today's day of the month is earlier than the birth day. You borrow a month and count the days across it.
- Born January 28, 1995; target date September 10, 2026. Whole years: 31, since January 28, 2026 has passed.
- Whole months: January 28 to August 28 is 7 months. September 28 has not arrived, so stop at August.
- Days: August 28 to September 10 is 13 days, because August has 31 days (3 days to the end of August plus 10).
- Result: 31 years, 7 months and 13 days. Tools that treat every month as 30 days can disagree by a day or two here.
A quick check helps: the leftover days should always be fewer than the length of the month you borrowed from. If you get 31 days after borrowing from a 30-day month, recount.
Leap years and February 29 birthdays
Dividing total days by 365 slowly drifts, because an average year is about 365.25 days. Counting calendar years first avoids that error.
- People born on February 29 celebrate on the 29th in leap years. The GrabCast calculator treats February 28 as the birthday in common years.
- Legal conventions differ: many US contexts use February 28, while some countries and some rules use March 1. If a form cares, check its wording.
- Month ends are clamped in date math: January 31 plus one month is February 28, or February 29 in a leap year.
- Total days alive always include every leap day you have lived through, which is why a 36-year-old has lived 9 of them.
Time zones add a final wrinkle. A baby born just before midnight in New York was born on the next calendar day in London, so official documents always use the date recorded where the birth happened.
Using the Age Calculator for age on any date
The Age tab gives far more than a single number, and everything runs in your browser with nothing uploaded.
- Leave Age on empty to use today, or set any past or future date, such as a school cutoff or a visa departure date.
- Results include years, months and days, plus total months, weeks, days and hours, the weekday you were born, zodiac sign and generation.
- It counts down to your next birthday, 169 days away for the March 15 example, and shows your next 1,000-day milestone, day 14,000 on July 13, 2028.
- Other tabs count days between dates including US business days, add or subtract days and months, and run a live countdown. Copy share link sends the exact calculation.
Everything the tool shows can be copied as a one-line summary, which is handy for filling in forms, and the share link recreates the exact calculation on another device without storing anything on a server.
Many health and money calculators ask for your age, such as the Retirement Calculator and the Calorie Calculator, so it helps to have the exact figure ready.
