How to use Password Generator

  1. 1. Choose a tab: Password for random characters, Passphrase for random words, or PIN for digits only. A new result appears instantly.
  2. 2. Set the length (4 to 128 characters), pick A–Z, a–z, 0–9 and Symbols, and optionally avoid look-alikes or exclude characters a site doesn’t accept.
  3. 3. Check the strength meter, which shows bits of entropy and the average time to guess offline and online. Press the refresh button for another option.
  4. 4. Click Copy and save the password in your password manager, or open Generate many at once to create up to 500 and download a .txt file.

Frequently asked questions

Is this password generator free, and how many passwords can I make?

It is free with no sign-up. Generate one at a time, or open Generate many at once to create between 1 and 500 passwords, passphrases or PINs in one list that you can copy all or download as a .txt file.

Are passwords from this generator sent or stored anywhere?

No. Passwords are created on your device using the browser’s cryptographic random generator with unbiased sampling, and nothing is sent to our server or saved. Passphrase mode downloads only the public EFF word list, not your results.

How long should a strong password be?

For most accounts, aim for 16 characters or more with all four character types, which the meter rates as strong or very strong. Use a unique password for every site and store them in a password manager so you don’t have to remember them.

Is a passphrase more secure than a random password?

A passphrase is easier to type and remember. Each word from the 7,776-word EFF list adds about 12.9 bits, so the default six words give roughly 77 bits. A 20-character random password with all character types is stronger, but harder to memorize.

How do I make a password without special characters a website rejects?

Edit the Symbols to use box to keep only the symbols the site allows, or type the rejected characters into Never use these characters. You can also uncheck Symbols entirely and make the password longer to keep the same strength.

What does the password strength meter measure?

It shows entropy in bits based on length and the character set or word list, rated from Very weak to Very strong. It also estimates the average time to guess at 10 billion guesses per second offline and 100 per second online.
