Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate sales tax on a price?
Multiply the pre-tax price by the combined rate and add it on. $100 at 8.75% is $8.75 tax and $108.75 total. In the calculator, choose Add tax, pick your state and enter your city or county rate in Local rate.
How do I remove VAT or sales tax from a total?
Divide the total by one plus the rate. £120 including 20% VAT is £100 before VAT and £20 VAT. Subtracting 20% of the total gives the wrong answer (£96), and the Remove tax tab shows that difference so you can see why.
Why doesn’t the state rate match my receipt?
Most US states let cities, counties and special districts add their own sales tax on top of the statewide rate. The presets show the state base rate as of 2025; add the local part in Local rate, or check your receipt or your state revenue department for the exact combined rate.
Which EU and UK VAT rates are included?
The standard VAT rate for all 27 EU countries, plus the UK, Switzerland and Norway, as of 2025 — for example 19% in Germany, 20% in France and the UK, and 27% in Hungary. Reduced rates for food, books or transport are not preset; type them into the rate box.
Can I calculate tax on a receipt with several items?
Yes. The Itemized tab takes each item’s quantity and price, lets you mark items as non-taxable, applies a discount across the order and can include taxable or non-taxable shipping. It shows the subtotal, taxable amount, tax and total.
Is the sales tax calculator free and private?
Yes. It is free with no sign-up, and the math runs in your browser as you type, so your amounts are not sent anywhere. A share link keeps the values after the # in the address, which browsers do not send to websites.
