How to use AI Translator

  1. 1. Pick the source language in the first menu (or leave Detect language) and the target language in the second; the ⇄ button swaps both languages and the text.
  2. 2. Choose a Tone — Natural, Formal, Casual or Literal — then type or paste your text, or click Translate a file to load a .txt, .srt, .vtt or .md file.
  3. 3. Click Translate or press Ctrl/Cmd+Enter. Long text is translated in chunks with a progress percentage, and subtitle numbering and timestamps are kept exactly as they were.
  4. 4. Review the result in the right-hand box, then click Copy or Download; a downloaded file keeps its original extension with the target language code added to the name.

💡 Tip: For best accuracy, translate one paragraph at a time and keep sentences clear and complete.

🌐 Need the same subtitles in several languages at once, with reading-speed checks and YouTube caption tracks? Use the Multilingual Subtitle Pack.

Frequently asked questions

Is the AI Translator free, and how much text can I translate at once?

Yes, it’s free with no sign-up. The text box holds up to 60,000 characters, and uploaded files can be up to 2 MB of text. Long passages are split into chunks automatically. When the free AI services are busy, you may be asked to try again in a minute or with a shorter text.

Is my text sent to a server when I use the AI translator?

Usually, yes. In recent Chrome, if you choose a specific source language with the Natural or Literal tone, Chrome’s built-in on-device translator is used and nothing leaves your computer. Otherwise your text goes to our AI server and on to an AI provider (Groq or Pollinations), with MyMemory as a backup. Don’t paste confidential text.

How do I translate an SRT subtitle file without breaking the timestamps?

Click Translate a file and choose your .srt or .vtt file, or paste the subtitles into the box. The tool spots the timing lines, translates only the dialogue in batches, and keeps cue numbers and timestamps byte-for-byte. Click Download to save the translated subtitles with the same extension.

What does the tone setting change in an AI translation?

Natural aims for fluent, idiomatic wording; Formal makes it polite and business-ready; Casual sounds friendly; Literal stays as close to the source as possible while remaining grammatical. In every tone the AI is told to keep line breaks, lists, markdown, URLs, numbers and product names intact.

Which languages can the AI Translator translate between?

35 languages, including English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Polish, Ukrainian, Russian, Arabic, Hebrew, Hindi, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Thai, Indonesian, Filipino and Swahili. Leave the source on Detect language and the browser or the AI works out the original language for you.

Can I translate Markdown or plain text files and keep the formatting?

Yes. The file picker accepts .txt, .md, .srt and .vtt files. The AI is instructed to preserve line breaks, lists, markdown syntax and links, and paragraphs are sent in order so the structure survives. For legal, medical or official documents, have a qualified human translator review the result.
